About Us
FAMILIES & FRIENDS OF RICHMOND STATE SUPPORTED LIVING CENTER, INC. is an organization established in the late 1960s as “Richmond State School Parent Association.” The original membership consisted of parents whose sons and daughters with I/DD (Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities) were living at “Richmond State School,” which was the name of the Richmond facility at that time.
We are a charity whose primary purposes were and are:
1) to enhance the quality of life for our loved ones at Richmond State Supported Living Center;
2) to inform our members about the facility and its services and about events at the local, state and national levels affecting the facility and its residents.
HOW OUR NAME HAS EVOLVED: After being known for more than 30 years as “Richmond State School Parent Association”, we changed our name in the early 2000s to “Richmond State School Families and Friends” in order to be more inclusive of siblings, guardians, and others. Shortly thereafter the Texas Legislature chose to rename the 13 “State Schools” to “State Supported Living Centers.” In order to stay relevant, we adopted the name “Families & Friends of Richmond State Supported Living Center”. Since the name is so long, we frequently refer to the state facilities as SSLCs, and we call the Richmond facility “Richmond SSLC” or just “RSSLC”. And, sometimes we shorten our name to “Families & Friends of RSSLC.”
DONATIONS: We are a 501(c)(3) charity listed with the IRS as “Families & Friends of Richmond State Supported Living Center, Inc.” Our EIN is 26-1826309. Contributions are fully tax-deductible. There are no membership dues, so we really appreciate voluntary contributions. For simplicity, please make all donations to Families & Friends of RSSLC.
